The first M3 was introduced in 1986. It was available with or without catalyst.
Both models had four cylinder engines. In 1988 a convertible came available.
In 1989 the M3 received a new engine which now had 215 HP. In 1992 a new M3
was introduced. This model had a six cylinder with 286 HP.
In 1994 a M3 sedan
and convertible came available.

In 1996 all models received a new engine which
now had 321 HP. The sedan went out of production in 1997. The E36 coupe and
convertible went out production in 1999.
In 2000, BMW introduced the E46 M3.
It had a six cylinder engine with 343 HP. One year later the convertible was
introduced. Also new was SMG 2, a smart gearbox which makes it possible to shift
just like Ralf Schumacher or Juan Pablo Montoya in their Formula 1 race cars!
